Barren_Island

Rising dramatically from the blue waters of the Andaman Sea, Barren Island is India’s only active volcano and one of the most fascinating geological sites in Asia. Located about 135 kilometers northeast of Port Blair, the island is uninhabited and known for its stark, otherworldly landscape. The volcano last erupted in 2018, and even today, faint smoke plumes can often be seen rising from its crater. The surrounding waters, however, contrast the rugged terrain – rich coral reefs and marine life make it one of the top scuba diving destinations in the region.

How to Reach:
The island can be visited by chartered boats or live-aboard ships from Havelock or Port Blair. Visitors are not allowed to disembark, but boats anchor offshore, allowing travelers to view the volcano safely. Diving expeditions require prior permission from the Andaman administration.

Best Time to Visit:
The best time is between November and April, when sea conditions are calm, and visibility is excellent for marine activities. Monsoon months are not recommended due to rough seas.
